There are many companies that sell hair for use in hair extensions, wigs, and hair pieces. But how do you know whether the company you’re looking at is a good one? Here are some things that all good hair companies have in common.
Good Hair Companies Offer Virgin Remy Hair
Virgin (unprocessed) remy hair is the very best material for wigs and hair extensions. Virgin remy hair retains its original texture and cuticle alignment, which allows the hairpiece to last longer than hairpieces made from other types of hair. Because virgin remy hair is natural and not synthetic, it is easier to style and can be heat-styled without doing any more damage than you would do to your natural hair.
Things you might find if you get second-rate hair
When hair comes from multiple donors, as it does from “barbershop hair,” it is gathered and sorted by length, then treated chemically to create uniform texture. You’ll also find that because the cuticles are out of alignment, it tangles and mats more easily than wigs and extensions made from virgin remy hair. Because of the chemical treatment needed to create that uniform texture, the hair may look fake.
You may also find wigs made of a mixture of synthetic and real hair, which results in a wig that “looks like a wig” rather than looking like your natural hair. Synthetic hair is also easily damaged by heat styling, which can cause anything from fake-looking hair to actual melting if you use a straightening iron or curling iron.
Good Companies’ Hair is Ethically Sourced
Ethically sourced hair is purchased from the donor with their permission for a reasonable price. Good hair companies do not use slave labor or workers obtained through human trafficking to create and gather the hair. Finally, ethically sourced products are made from the highest quality materials—hair from a single donor gathered into a ponytail—and produced using safe methods that do not cause damage.
Beware of exploitation
While much hair from India is donated for religious rites, that is unfortunately not the same for hair purchased from Southeast Asia, much of which is gathered by exploitation. Traders buy hair from desperately poor people who are easy prey for those seeking to use them for making a profit. For example, Vietnamese woman Nguyen Thi Thuy told Refinery29 that the most she had ever been offered for her hip-length, very well cared-for hair was about 70,000 dong ($3 U.S.) This for hair that could have fetched hundreds of dollars per weft in the U.S.
But it’s not just Southeast Asia. Women in war-torn or economically desperate areas such as Venezuela, Ukraine, and Tunisia are also selling their hair for pennies on the dollar in a desperate attempt to feed, clothe, or house their family. Be sure to ask your hair vendor where their hair comes from and how it was obtained so you know you’re not buying hair that was purchased at exploitative prices.
Good Hair Companies’ Products Are Not Cheap
Hair extensions or wigs are an investment, not just in dollars but in your appearance and sense of self-confidence. You owe it to yourself to spend the money to buy a quality product. A quality product is about more than just hair, though; it’s about how the hair is attached to the cap. Is it individually sewn in, or have the wefts been machine-sewn?
At Jasmine Nicole, we make lace-front wigs, which create a much more natural look for the wearer. By using a very thin, almost invisible lace material, our master constructionists hand-tie the hairs onto the lace cap one by one with a triple-stitch method created by Jasmine Nicole that uses the same crochet method as ancient Egyptians. Although this technique is more time-consuming and expensive than sewing wefts of hair onto a cap, it is the best method for producing natural-looking and versatile wigs.
Jasmine Nicole custom wigs and bespoke perucas
Our custom wigs are seasonal collection lines—limited-edition releases of specific peruca prototypes, with the sizing and lace fitted to your head. Our master constructionists create a base fitted to your head size, with a lace color you select to match your natural hair.
Bespoke perucas, on the other hand, are fully customizable. They are not in our collection because they’re made specifically for you, to your specifications. You are in control of the bespoke peruca process by building your own design from length to style to color.
Communication Is Key
Good hair companies communicate regularly with their customers. They share photos of the wig or hair piece in progress and get the customer’s approval every step of the way. This is the Jasmine Nicole way: we want you to be happy with your peruca or hair piece, and the only way to do that is to make sure we communicate with you at every step along the way.
An example of good communication
Lisa decides she wants to buy a wig. She contacts the hair company and they explain where the hair came from and what different colors and textures are available for the hair, explaining the best uses of each and how they might work with her natural hair texture. They ask her to measure her head circumference and then construct a cap designed specifically to fit on her head. They take photos of the wig throughout the process, from multiple angles, so Lisa can be sure she’s getting what she wants.
When it comes time to ship the wig, the company employs a shipping company with a good reputation and provides Lisa with a tracking number. They then follow up with Lisa to see if she received the wig and if she’s satisfied with it.
Good Hair Companies Offer Good Customer Service
Good customer service is key, even if you’re not ready to buy yet. Hair companies should be willing and able to answer your questions about where and how their hair is sourced. They should be willing to describe in detail how their wigs and hair pieces are made—is the hair sewn in by hand, or is it machine-sewn, for example—and the process by which they would work with you to ensure you get what you want.
How Jasmine Nicole works with customers
We believe you should know what you’re getting, and we’re happy to answer any questions you have about the sourcing of our hair and how it’s made.
Custom wigs are created based on one of our seasonal collection prototypes. You create a profile on our site and tell us which prototype you want to use as the basis for your wig. A peruca specialist will contact you within 24 hours to get the process started. While this does not allow complete customization of the style or design of the peruca, one of our master constructionists will create a base fitted to your head size with a lace color of your choice. Our professional stylists and colorists complete the look, and your peruca will be ready in 21 days.
The process of making bespoke perucas begins with you. You create a profile on our site and include a photo of the look you want. A peruca specialist will contact you within 24 hours. After we get all the measurements we need, we create a cap designed to fit your head and sew the wefts on by hand. Although our typical peruca creation process takes 21 days, a bespoke peruca may take longer because we are sure to get your approval at each stage of the process before we move forward with construction and styling.
Shipping and returns
All Jasmine Nicole products are shipped via UPS with adult signature required. Because federal regulations prohibit us from accepting returns, all sales are final.
Good Hair Companies Have Good Reviews
Don’t trust website testimonials alone. You have no way of knowing whether or not they’re written by real customers. Unscrupulous vendors can easily create testimonials from fake customers to make it sound as if their product is high-quality.
As we’ve said before, word of mouth is the best review of all—if you can find people who have shopped with the hair company before, ask about their experience.
Online reviews are your next best bet. Although the review system can be gamed, it’s much less likely with services where people have to leave their names such as Google Reviews, TrustPilot, or Yelp. If the reviews include photos, look carefully at them. You may be able to deduce information about the quality of the hair or hair piece from seeing pictures.
Look for trends in reviews
Don’t just look at recent reviews. Read all the reviews for at least a few years back. You want to look for things like how the vendor responded to negative reviews, and whether the reviews have stayed consistent or trended upward or downward. Are there any issues that are being consistently mentioned? Finally, be careful if you see that the more recent reviews are worse than past reviews or if the vendor has responded unprofessionally to negative reviews.
A Good Hair Company Will Help You Find the Hair That’s Right for You
Not all hair types work for everybody. If you’re a European woman with fine, thin hair, there are some wigs and hair extension types that may not work very well for you. Good hair companies will work with you to determine which of their products will match best with your own natural hair. For example, different types of extensions work better with different types of hair.
Extensions and hair types
Sew-in extensions work best for people with natural hair because they are installed by cornrowing the hair from ear to ear and then sewing the extensions onto the braids. They are best for thicker hair because thick hair can stand the strain of having these extensions installed.
Clip-in extensions are best for medium-density hair and are a great option for people who want to try extensions before deciding whether they want to have their extensions more permanently installed. Tape-in extensions work best for people with fine, thin hair because the tape is virtually invisible, while I-tips are best for medium to thick hair.
Good Hair Companies Offer Multiple, Secure Payment Options
Hair companies that are serious about the quality of their products offer the option of paying by credit card or PayPal, for example, as these payment methods have robust customer dispute options.
Beware of any company that only accepts payment by check, money order, or services such as MoneyGram or Western Union. It is much more difficult, if not outright impossible, to get your money back if you don’t receive a product or if the type or quality of hair you received is not what you ordered.
Jasmine Nicole accepts payments by credit card
At Jasmine Nicole, we stand by our product so we feel very secure in offering payment options that will allow you to get your money back if you’re not satisfied. We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express, JCB, and Diners Club.
All payments are processed through Stripe, a well-reputed and secure credit card processing platform. Your payment information is collected only by Stripe, and your payment data is never stored on our website.
And here’s one final consideration: think about how easy it is to contact your hair vendor. If you’re buying from a vendor in a distant location, responses to your inquiries may not be timely due to the difference in time zones between your location and the country where the hair vendor is located. Jasmine Nicole is based in the U.S., in Seattle, Washington, and we pride ourselves on being able to quickly answer any questions or address any concerns you may have.
